I would like to be the first to welcome everyone to the 2013 edition of the Frys.com Open. This week the best players in the world will travel to San Martin, California to battle a track known as CordeValle Golf Club. Last week we ended up going 5-4 with our selection as the Americans retained the Presidents Cup.
Lets get back to picking some outright winners for the big paydays during the start of the 2014 PGA Tour Season. This is the first year with the wrap around schedule and you will see a lot of young players competing over the next few weeks. Lets take a closer look at the course that will challenge the players this week.
CordeValle Golf Club is a Par 71, 7368 yard, Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed gem of a course.Over the years the course has ranked in the middle for difficulty, as players do have the opportunity to go very low with solid play. Players can expect a thinking mans golf course; one where accurate shots will be rewarded and ones that go astray penalized. With only 2 water hazards located on CordeValle, players will be more focused on avoiding extremely thick rough areas and the plethora of bunkers (63 in total).
The winner this week will most likely be the player who putts the ball better than anyone. CordeValle is home to some of the Tours largest greens, resulting in an above average number of greens hit in regulation. Robert Trent Jones Jr. has done an excellent job at utilizing slight breaks in the greens, forcing players and their caddies to read the greens perfectly.
Three players at last years event tied the course record, posting sizzling rounds of 62. Nick O’Hearn, John Mallinger, and Jimmy Walker all fired 9 under rounds of 62, a score I feel could be beat this week. Weather is expected to be very co-operative for the most part in San Martin, with calm and sunny conditions. Players will have the ability to attack pins and go extremely low.
Lets take a closer look at 5 players I feel will roll in plenty of putts and have a great chance of becoming the 2013 Frys.com Open Champion.
Steve’s Frys.com Open 6-Pack System Picks
We will be going with five golfers this week as one of our selections will be getting two units.
Picks are sent to members of GolfBanker.com, but I’ve got a free outright winner pick below…
Charles Howell III 43 to 1 – Howell will dream about having the same start to this season as he had in 2013. Charles posted three straight Top 10 finishes to kick start last years campaign in style. Unfortunately for Charles he did not pick up a victory in 2013, and will look for his first one since the 2008 Nissan Open this week. I find it amazing that someone with Charles talent has played so many tournament since his last victory, but it has come down to just a few missed shots and far too many “close” finishes. If he is going to break the winless streak CordValle may be the perfect location to do so. Last season Charles finished in a tie for 11th at this tournament, and would have contended had it not been for a disappointing final round of 72. That was his only start at CordValle, so I expect him to play with confidence this week. Charles will need to improve on his accuracy with the driver this week if he is going to contend, as he ranked 173rd on Tour for Driving Accuracy. At the 2012 Frys.com Open he hit over 64% of his fairways leading to a staggering 79% of his Greens in Regulation hit.
