Abu Dhabi Championship Picks

I would like to welcome everyone to the 2012 edition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

I have decided to analysis and predict the European Tour this week as the field is terrific and it is one of the premier events on the Tour. Six of the world’s Top 10 players will be teeing it up in Abu Dhabi, all looking to get off to a great start in 2012. They will be joined by long time world number 1, and possibly the most recognizable athlete in the world, Tiger Woods.

This should be a great tournament to both watch and wager on. Now let’s take a closer look at the course.

***TAKE NOTE OF THE TIME DIFFERENCE — GET YOUR WAGERS IN EARLY***

The Course Money was not an issue when designing and building this stunning country club in the desert. 162 hectares of challenging golf comprises one the nicest championship courses in the world. The Par 72 course measures between 7440 and 7510 yards; depending on where they set up the tees. The course features 7 extremely large lakes to go along with 90 bunkers.

To play this course well you need to have distance off the tee and avoid some thick and gnarly lies found in the rough. The greens are large but will test your ability to read putts, as they have various subtle breaks in them. Look for players with a plethora of course knowledge and confidence to understand these greens with ease. I say this because although they are challenging, they are in magnificent shape and extremely true.

The Players

Absolutely everyone will be paying attention to the 740am tee off time (on the 10th tee). With Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Luke Donald playing in a threesome, the excitement will be palpable. Luke Donald is the only of the 3 yet to win a major championship, but he is the world number 1. Rory will be focused as he has finished Top 5 in all of the last 3 tournaments here (T5, 3rd and 2nd). Tiger will be looking to build of his win late in the 2011 season (all be it at his own tournament in a reduced field).

Though much of the attention will be paid to that star studded grouping, many other players deserve the public’s attention. Here is a list of top named players competing this week

Lee Westwood – The world’s number 2 player and someone who is looking to capture his first major in 2012.

Martin Kaymer – The world’s number 4 player has won this event 3 times (including the last two years).

Charl Schwartzel – The world’s number 8 player and last year’s Masters Champion.

Jason Day – One of the best up and coming stars always seems to be near the top of the leaderboard in large events. Currently ranked 10th in the world golf rankings.

Graeme McDowell – A major champion who looks to get back on track in 2012 after an up and down year. Currently ranked 13th in the world.

KJ Choi – A player who many people overlook but could make noise in the majors this year. Currently the world’s number 14 golfer.

Sergio Garcia – Vaulted all the way to 17th in the world rankings thanks to back to back wins last year on the European Tour.

Since I was young I’ve spent as much time on the golf course as the weather will allow me to. As I began to bet on sports I figured I would try my luck at the sport I know the best - golf. I began hitting winners on a regular basis and have turned it into a really solid part time income profiting in 8 of the last 9 years.

Round 1 Snedecker -130 Over Yang

Below is my Yahoo fantasy write-up

Last week even the Fantasy guy at yahoo fell into the same trap i did getting too caught up on the course management and forgetting that your players still got to play.

Torrey Pines is not a bombers paradice but it does favor long hitters. One can see that form thel sit of past champions here. This is the old Andy williams Tournament and I will admit i miss some of the old Hollywood star power that is now gone forever from the now oh so corporate PGA tour.

Key Stats this week are Total Driving and ball striking with a nod toward total putting. The recent rains have made the rough super long 4 to 5 inches so keeping tee shots on the short grass will be a priority this week

So went with a mix of length, youth and experience this week lets see if I do better.

    A
    Picks
Watney (top 10 last year, gr8 stats, gr8 form)
    Howell (Gr8 record , Hot)

    Drops
K Bradley (lacks history buyt stats are good
Michaelson (Let him prove he is in better form)

    Avoids
Vegas (Why is he an “A” when his play is an “F”
Holmes (Rusty off injury must prove his length is controllable before i play him)

    B
    Picks
Hass (record, top 10 2011, Hot)
    Snedecker (Length, Stats good record)
Fowler (top 20 last year, Stats and form)
Leishman (Gr8 value pick , streaky

    Drops
B Watson (recent form makes Defending champ a bit below other picks)
Dejong ( record not as good as others but Stats are)
    Rose (not yet but soon
Mahan ( middle pcik but not good enuf, dangerous if putter hot)

Avoids either are not driving well or have bad recs here
    Streelman
    Van pelt
    Hoffman

    C
    picks
Crane Gr8 record, stats and form should be a pick to win in any format
    Cauley (that swing that swing)

    Drops
Sutherland (Gr8 record here but lacks form)
Wi (Form not there but he likes the West Coast)

    Avoids
Vegas (awful form his win is fading)
Atwal (bad form , bad record, bad end 2011)
    Bettencourt (cut missing machine)

  2. Update Farmers Round Two

Won round one match Snedecker over Yang which was a reasonable -130 and now for round 2 is a worse -175

So for Round Two going with

    Cauley -120 over Garrigus.

Cauley is off to a great start and I am so impressed with this rookies swing and attitude. Garrigus is a big hitter but wild. His record here is awful 3 missed cuts in 4 years and his west coast swing record is overalll poor and he finshed last year poorly too.

I’ll take the lessor known stylish Rookie Cauley over the Erratic Garrigus.

  3. Update Farmers round 3

Won Round Two match easily as Cauley outplayed Garrigus and weekly already won as well as both Sutherland and Baird missed the cut but Baird missed by much more then Sutherland

Round 3 taking B Hass -115 over Allenby

Hass is playing awesome golf right now and was unable to follow a stellar round 1 with a low score on the Tougher South course but I beleive he will bounce back in round 3 on Saturday

Allenby in 2011 was 165 in total driving and 164 in ball striking the two Stats I thought were most important this week and missed his first cut in 2012 and missed cut here last year though in previous years he has had better finishes here.

Differences in Form and Stat profile make laying small wood of -115 a very good bargain so its Hass over Allanby in round 3

  4. Update Farmers Round 4

Won Round 3 as Hass easily outshot Allanby bringing this week to 4-0

Trying for the perfet 5-0 week but not thrilled with the options at 5 dimes. One of the hardest parts of golf betting is that you aree at the mercy of what match-ups the house(s)where you play decide to create.

Sunday going with Howell -135 over G.Oglivy.

Oglivy shot one of the lowest rounds saturday at 5 under but does not have much history here, does not p[lay well on west coast and is coming off a subpar 2011.

Howell is a young talent was top 20 here last year and has a much better stats profile for this course.

Playing this slighttly lighter so only risking what I won yesterday and accepting a slightly lower potential return

    but for round 4

    playing Howell -135 over Oglivy.

Stil have an outside shot at a tourny win if either Hass or Snedecker go very low and of course need the leader Stanley to not play as well and give others a chance.

    GLTA

  5. Update

Won round 4 and in one of the luckiest moments of my sports betting life WON On Snedecker Tourny WIN BET.

5-0 in matches and a tournament winner bet too.
