Another week where we had guys near the lead on Sunday who couldn’t close it out. We did have the winner of the tournament in our Draft Kings selections (Si Woo Kim $6800), something that helped many to profitable weeks. We move onto the first leg on the FedEx playoffs this week at The 2016 Barclays.
Bethpage Black will be the host this week and that is not good news for people expecting low scores. Known as one of the most challenging tests in the United States. The last time we had a chance to see the worlds best on Bethpage Black was in 2012 edition of the Barclays (won by Nick Watney at -10). Only 4 players that week went lower than -5, something that will be similar this week.
Bethpage Black plays 7468 yards and is a Par 71, a combination that obviously favours length. One of the neat things I find about this great course is that it has been open to the Public since 1936 when it opened. Tee to Green will be a crucial stat this week, as Bethpage allowed players to hit just 11.30 Greens in Regulation per round in 2012.
The Top 125 in the Fed Rex Cup will be teeing it up this week looking to secure their spot in next weeks 100 man field. The Top 5 players entering this week are Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Adam Scott, Russell Knox, and Jordan Spieth. I bring up the Top 5 because when the finale rolls around in about a month at East Lake GC, it is the Top 5 who control their own destiny. We do know though that anything can happen in the playoffs, as the points given out are increased.
The weather looks like it will be great for the players this week. Warm conditions are expected with only a small chance of a storm hitting.
Steve’s Expert The Barclays Picks
EMILIANO GRILLO 80/1 – Grillo finished T8 at the Olympic competition last week, his 5th Top 14 in his last 7 starts. The young Argentinean is best known for his excellent driving of the golf ball (ranks 3rd on Tour for Total Driving). He is one of the most talented young players in the world and I think people are going to start to take bigger notice. He won The Frys last fall and that victory will really help his nerves on the weekend.
6. Brandt Snedeker (8900) – Great putter and very good driver of the ball. That a good combination to win at Bethpage. Finished runner up in 2012.
7. Emiliano Grillo (8300) – Love this value and selection. Enters very hot and should enjoy his first trip to Bethpage.
8. Jimmy Walker (8200) – MC last week but I expect him to bounce back. Should be low owned because of that MC.
