We have another World Golf Championship tournament this week which means all the best players in the world will be competing. 69 players from all across the world will battle it out for a prized Championship. 13 major winners will be competing and every player who has won this year is in the field. It should be an excellent 4 days of golf and I look forward to some of the groups over the 1st two days.
A 7266 yard Par 72 course will be the host this week, and it is nicknamed Blue Monster for a reason. The 11 water hazards will suck up plenty of balls this week, due to difficult tee shots and well placed pins. While players are worrying about the ‘blue’ on the course they might find a little too much beach. Dick Wilson is the original designer and Ramond Floyd was the man who restored the course in 1986. They both did an excellent job of placing bunkers in common shot areas. There are 110 bunkers across the course forcing players to be accurate with their drives and irons.
Hole 4 is easily one of the most difficult Par 3’s in the world. At 236 yards in length and water on the right many players are forced to aim well left. The problem with doing that is there are two very deep green side bunkers. If any wind picks up this hole will give the players fits.
McDowell, Woods, and Mickelson will attract most eyes over the 1st two days. I love what the PGA Tour has done by matching up viewer friendly groups. Woods has won this event 6 times and looks to win his first tournament on the PGA since 2009. Mickelson has also won this tournament in 2009 and will look to build on a solid start to the year. Graeme McDowell is currently 4th in the World Golf Rankings, and has publically stated he wants to be number 1.
Another group that has my attention is the 3 Top players in the world. Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald will have the pleasure of playing in an all European group for the 1st and 2nd round. These players have all had solid starts to the year but will be looking to gain momentum leading into the years first major (The Masters).
Steves Six Pack Picks
This week we are hitting the winner. Enough of these 2nd and 3rd place finishes we have been having lately. We are going with a few players who have played very well this year and a few players who will look to vault themselves into the Top World Ranking soon.
Graeme Mcdowell – 14/1 – McDowell wants to be number 1 in the world. He has had two United States starts this year and has finished no worse than 6th. Look for him to move up the rankings this week with an excellent finish.
Geoff Ogilvy – 35/1 – One of the best putters on tour will display his talents this week on the Blue Monster. He also won this event in 2008.
Hunter Mahan – 40/1 – A player who thrives when he plays with the best in the world. You won’t see his eyes behind his big sunglasses but he will have his eyes on the prize this week.
Bubba Watson – 40/1 – A player who absolutely loves to shape the ball and hit it a mile. No shot from Bubba is done by the book as he has never had a lesson. This hasn’t stopped him from becoming one of the best on Tour this year.
Justin Rose – 50/1 – A completely ridiculous price for Justin Rose. He should be 25/1. Played awesome in the last WGC event but fell to Martin Kaymer on extra holes. Look for his white putter and driver to lead him to victory this week
Ian Poulter – 50/1 – Hunter Mahan may thrive when playing against the best, but no one on Tour wants to beat the best more than Poulter. He will be paired with long bombing Dustin Johnson and Bubba Watson for the first two rounds. Watch him hit his irons on these long Par 3s as he is one of the best iron players in the world.
Good luck to our 6 pack and enjoy one of the best tournaments of the year.
